Mon 22nd Feb:
COURSE UPDATE (2)...FEATURING..
GREENS, TEES, FAIRWAYS, BUNKERS AND PRACTICE FACILITIES.
GREENS...
LAST SEASON DURING JULY 2009 SAW MY FIRST REAL BLIP IN SEVEN YEARS DURING MY TIME WORKING AT CHORLTON GOLF CLUB.
UNLIKE MANY GOLF CLUBS THAT EMPLOY OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS I PREFER TO CARRY OUT PROJECTS IN-HOUSE. NOT ONLY IS THIS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO THE CLUB ! YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT I WILL NOT CUT CORNERS AND BURY SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT WORK IN THE FUTURE.
UNFORTUNATELY LAST YEAR I ENCOUNTERED UNFORSEEN PROBLEMS WHILST UPGRADING THE GREENS IRRIGATION SYSTEM,
THE REST I HOPE IS NOW HISTORY AND I CAN LOOK FORWARD TO PRODUCING A COURSE AND GREENS FOR YOU TO BE PROUD OF.
A GREAT DEAL OF AERATION HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE GREENS RECENTLY. I WILL BE APPLYING TOP DRESSING, SEED AND FERTILISER OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WITH THE INTENTION OF KICK STARTING THE GREENS AFTER THIS RECENT SPELL OF BAD WEATHER.
PLEASE BEAR IN MIND IT IS STILL WINTER AND THE SOIL NEEDS TO WARM UP ON EVERY COURSE BEFORE NORMAL SERVICE RESUMES.
THE DAMAGED GREENS ON 4,11 and 13 WILL BE COVERED WITH A GROW COVER SHEET THAT IS DESIGNED TO HELP GRASS SEED GERMINATE QUICKER DURING LOW TEMPETURES.
TEES...
SIMILAR WORK TO THAT CARRIED OUT ON THE GREENS WITH THE USE OF THE GROW COVER ON LOCAL AREAS WHERE THE TURF IS SPARCE.
FAIRWAYS..WE HAVE CARRIED OUT A LOT OF DEEP SPIKING ON CERTAIN FAIRWAYS THIS WINTER .
EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS HAVE BEEN SEEN ON 11,12,13 and 14th WHEREBY THERE HAS BEEN SIGNICANTLY LESS STANDING WATER. THIS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED AT A FRACTION OF THE MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS QUOTED FOR DRAINAGE WORK BY OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS.
ALL FAIRWAYS WILL BE CUT ,CLEANED AND DIVOT SCARS FILLED IN FOR THE START OF THE SEASON.
BUNKERS..BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS ALL BUNKERS WILL HAVE ALL BEEN EDGED AND TIDIED READY FOR FRESH SAND. WE HAVE BEEN USING DIFFERENT RAKES RECENTLY IN OUR EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE BUNKERS AND EARLY FEED BACK FROM SOME OF YOU IS PROMISING.
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT RAKES ARE NOW BACK IN THE BUNKERS AFTER THE TRIAL PERIOD OF GOLFERS CARRYING A RAKE IN THEIR BAG NEVER CAUGHT ON?
PRACTICE FACILITIES...THE NETS WILL BE BACK IN OPERATION THIS WEEK WITH EXTRA PADDING.
THE NEW CHIPPING GREEN PROJECT HAS STALLED SLIGHTLY DUE TO THE WEATHER BUT I HOPE TO CRACK ON WITH IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I ALSO INTEND TO INSTALL SOME SHORT GAME YARDAGE MARKERS TO TEST YOUR DISTANCE CONTROL !!!!

Pro Tip: Keeping your head down - Right or Wrong?
One of the things that I consistently hear when fellow amateurs try to cure each other’s faults is, "keep your head down." or "keep your head still." Too many people believe that the golf swing must be completed while keeping the head perfectly still. This is NOT, I repeat NOT the case.
During the golf swing it is perfectly acceptable to move your head as long as you do so in the proper direction. Rather than saying the things I mentioned above, golfers should say "Keep your head at the same level".
During the back swing it is natural for a golfers head to move back, away from the target - especially if you are doing a full turn of your shoulders. Shifting your head away from the target up to 8-10 inches is acceptable as long as your head remains at the same level (i.e. height off of the ground) it will not cause you any great problems. What does cause problems is when a player tries to keep his/her head perfectly still and as a result ends up restricting their back-swing or developing a reverse pivot and guaranteed lack of power.
Try this, it will prove my point - Keeping your head perfectly still throw a golf ball under arm down the practise ground. Now try the same thing but allow your head to come up and watch the ball fly down the practise ground. Which goes further?
If a golfer maintains the same level with their head then they will have a much better chance of returning the club back to the proper height when hitting the ball. Not doing so may result in hitting the ball fat or thin. For example, if your head rises during the swing so must your shoulders. Your shoulders are attached to your arms and they are, in turn, attached to your hands. Guess where the club is located? You got it - your hands! Therefore, if you raise your head your club will rise up as well and catch the ball thin. The opposite is obviously true for lowering your head. You will swing the club too low and hit the ball fat or heavy.
Now, although the vertical movement of your head can cause you to hit the ball thin or fat, there are many other reasons to miss-hit the ball in these ways. I don't want anyone to believe there are no other reasons to cause you to hit a fat or thin shot, there are! But if you keep your head at the same level throughout the swing, you will avoid these miss-hits more often.
I hope this puts an end one of golf’s worst myths.
Good Luck
David
HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PUTTING STROKE OF A TOUR PROFESSIONAL
The professional golfer and good amateurs will spend many hours practicing their putting – going for specialist training and using all kinds of training aids. This works for them but how many of you have had a top quality putting lesson? My first piece of advice is – Have a putting lesson and you will save yourself stroke after stroke.
Most of the putting stroke is ‘feel’ and judgement. Get these correct and your putting stroke will be improving. The way to achieve feel is by closing the eyes and just making the stroke. How different is your stroke when you do this? Can you feel things happening that you could not have done with your eyes open – we are beginning to get feel. You are also using other learning styles to aid improvement. Imagine the difference when you do this?
Pro Tip: Something for the weekend! How to avoid slicing the ball
• Aim: Your clubface could be too open.
• Grip: Your hands may be twisted too far round to the left of the grip, known as a weak grip. As you swing through the ball the blade is naturally opening.
• Ball position: The ball could be too far forward in your stance causing your shoulders to open.
• Stance: Your stance may be too narrow causing you to be unstable and rely too much on your arms through the forward swing rather than your hips.
• Body alignment: Your feet, hips and shoulders are probably aiming too far left of the target causing you to swing your club on an 'out to in' swing path.
• Posture: You may be standing too far from the ball.
Ball too far forward in stance
• Swing: In the first part of the backswing the club goes too much to the inside. The left arm goes too much across the chest. The arms have got nowhere to go so they lift and go over the top, like a figure of eight almost.
• Practise Drill: Hit shots from a side hill lie with the ball above your feet. This will get you swinging along the correct target line rather than in, up and over.

Times they are a-changin
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly fadin’.
Please get out of the way if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.
Dave - I agree - who is it and how do I contact him? - See my other related thoughts attached :
The more we know about the committee the better - I am really keen to understand how the club works so I can have an educated opinion on decisions and ultimately feel more of a an active member of the club.
Would it be possible for the committee members to inform us on:
1. Who is on the committee
2. What they do (responsibilities)
3. Publish pictures on the site
It would be really helpful if each committee member registered on the site and gave updates like Dave Berry - I think everybody agrees this kind of proactive communication has really helped the club and its members.
Why don't we publish the monthly minutes on the site under the committee notices? - thats why it was set up - I believe this would be greatly appreciated by the members as a whole as the more information provided the better.
In summary, better pro active communication = less confusion and more involvement / enjoyment will be had by all.
Ps while I'm giving my thoughts -Hull city will stay in the premiership this season !!!
Kevin, communication improvement is definitely needed. Speak to House Chairman personally.
I have a pic of a demoralised Jim Shuff after his 39 points was beaten.
He's a big lad. Dare I post it?
SOME CONFUSION OVER THE DRESS CODE PROPOSAL
There appears to have been some confusion over not only what was meant to happen tonight but also what was proposed regarding the relaxation of the dress code and our motivation for implementing it. Please allow me to clear this up.
Firstly we made a proposal that the club should allow the wearing of jeans on midweek evenings in order to make the club more accessible to members who are not used to wearing trousers sociallywhen away from the club.
The idea was based on the premise that when the light nights came in and members such as myself were playing golf, we would be more likely to stick around for a few pints, maybe watch the football (world cup coming up) and then move on to other pubs. As it stands if I plan on drinking elsewhere after golf then I rush home to change in to jeans. The plan was for a trial period which would be without restriction.
what proposed was:
to allow the wearing of jeans weekdays
what we were 'allowed' now seems to be:
*wear jeans AFTER 7.30pm
*if informing the council in advance
*providing there is football on
* more than 6 people are with you
*and the afore mentioned football is not on terrestrial tv.
Obviously wires have been crossed somewhere and if this was on our part then we apologise
The motivation for our request is simply, we are concerned about the financial prediciment the club finds itself in and want to raise money and maximise the profitability of the club to avoid membership increases and to retain existing membership. Also whilst creating a more sociable club for all.
we recognise the tradition of the club and respect the right of the council to decide against such a proposal, we would like to know why, upon deciding to allow jeans (reluctantly) they did not get behind the idea and support it?
I am not just reffering to the events of tonight, which I am prepared to view as a mix up, but to the lack of attendance from council members for the previous event.
Surely such a mix up as happened tonight would not have occurred if the council had supported the idea and actually chosen to get involved?
As I see it the proposal was given little if no chance of being a success.
we have no problem with our proposal being rejected but would ask what other actions are being taken to maximise the potential of the clubhouse during the week?
we are all trying to improve the club and I look forward to hearing any responses from all members of the club, all ideas welcome
Rob, Is Liam or another pal going to wear a skirt for you. The Deakin is a mixed comp and you have
not put a lady partner's name down.
Match cancelled 'cos nobody bothered to put names on a list and we can't have the bar open just in
case 3 or 4 people turn up. We need to sell enough beer to cover bar wages etc. Arrangement on selected opening for football is to cover SKY not terrestrial.
