COURSE SET UP FOR FINALS WEEKEND.
FIRST OF ALL.. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THIS WEEKENDS FINALIST....
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE ON HAVING TO PLAY ON SOME TEMPORARY GREENS THIS WINTER.
MONDAY THE 8th OF MARCH (weather permitting) I WILL BE STARTING RENOVATION WORK ON THE 4th..11th and 13th GREENS .
THE AFOREMENTIONED GREENS HAVE BENIFITED FROM A FEW MONTHS REST. I AM PREPARED AND PLEASED TO BRING THEM BACK INTO PLAY FOR FINALS WEEKEND PRIOR TO BENIFICIAL RESTORATION WORK.
PLAYING ON THE ABOVE GREENS OVER THIS WEEKEND WILL NOT CAUSE ANY FURTHER DAMAGE .
THE GREENS APPEARANCE DOES NOT LOOK GOOD BUT THE UNDERLYING SURFACE WILL ROLL BETTER THAN IT LOOKS!!!!
ON MONDAY THE PLAN IS TO SCARIFY, HOLLOW TINE,TOP DRESS AND OVERSEED THE GREENS FOLOWED BY BRUSHING IN . THE GREENS WILL THEN BE PROTECTED BY A GROW COVER WHICH WILL ENCOURAGE THE SEED TO GERMINATE.
WORK ON THE 16th HILL HAS PROGRESSED THIS WEEK AND WE ARE NOW ABLE TO LOOK AT SOWING GRASS SEED ON THE BANKINGS EARLY NEXT WEEK.
OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WE WILL BE CONCENTRATING OUR EFFORTS ON FINISHING ALL SEEMINGLY ABANDONED DRAINAGE PROJECTS.
THE NEW PRACTICE GREEN PROJECT WILL ALSO BE DEVELOPED AS THE WEATHER IMPROVES.
I AM HOPING TO CARRY OUT SOME FINAL PRUNING WORK FOR THIS YEAR ALONG THE 9th and 10th HOLES.
THE PATH AT THE 9th TEE WILL ALSO BE RESURFACED AND ITS LAYOUT ALTERED TO AID MAINTENANCE AND TRAFFIC FLOW.
THATS ALL FOR NOW.
MANY THANKS..
DB
Mon 22nd Feb:

THIS SEASON THERE WILL BE NO MAJOR PROJECTS BEING CARRIED OUT ON THE COURSE OR CAR PARK .
OUR AIM THIS YEAR IS TO COMPLETE ALL TAIL ENDS OF JOBS THAT APPEAR ABANDONED.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE AND COURSE PRESENTATION WILL BE OF THE HIGHEST PRIORITY .
ONCE AGAIN I REMIND YOU THAT I AM ALWAYS AVAILABLE AND WILLING TO DISCUSS ANY IDEAS OR CONCERNS YOU MIGHT HAVE REGARDING YOR GOLF COURSE.
THIS WAY I AM CERTAIN ANY PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE WILL BE DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY AND PERSONALLY BY MYSELF.

Mon 22nd Feb:
COURSE UPDATE (2)...FEATURING..
GREENS, TEES, FAIRWAYS, BUNKERS AND PRACTICE FACILITIES.
GREENS...
LAST SEASON DURING JULY 2009 SAW MY FIRST REAL BLIP IN SEVEN YEARS DURING MY TIME WORKING AT CHORLTON GOLF CLUB.
UNLIKE MANY GOLF CLUBS THAT EMPLOY OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS I PREFER TO CARRY OUT PROJECTS IN-HOUSE. NOT ONLY IS THIS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO THE CLUB ! YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT I WILL NOT CUT CORNERS AND BURY SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT WORK IN THE FUTURE.
UNFORTUNATELY LAST YEAR I ENCOUNTERED UNFORSEEN PROBLEMS WHILST UPGRADING THE GREENS IRRIGATION SYSTEM,
THE REST I HOPE IS NOW HISTORY AND I CAN LOOK FORWARD TO PRODUCING A COURSE AND GREENS FOR YOU TO BE PROUD OF.
A GREAT DEAL OF AERATION HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE GREENS RECENTLY. I WILL BE APPLYING TOP DRESSING, SEED AND FERTILISER OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WITH THE INTENTION OF KICK STARTING THE GREENS AFTER THIS RECENT SPELL OF BAD WEATHER.
PLEASE BEAR IN MIND IT IS STILL WINTER AND THE SOIL NEEDS TO WARM UP ON EVERY COURSE BEFORE NORMAL SERVICE RESUMES.
THE DAMAGED GREENS ON 4,11 and 13 WILL BE COVERED WITH A GROW COVER SHEET THAT IS DESIGNED TO HELP GRASS SEED GERMINATE QUICKER DURING LOW TEMPETURES.
TEES...
SIMILAR WORK TO THAT CARRIED OUT ON THE GREENS WITH THE USE OF THE GROW COVER ON LOCAL AREAS WHERE THE TURF IS SPARCE.
FAIRWAYS..WE HAVE CARRIED OUT A LOT OF DEEP SPIKING ON CERTAIN FAIRWAYS THIS WINTER .
EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS HAVE BEEN SEEN ON 11,12,13 and 14th WHEREBY THERE HAS BEEN SIGNICANTLY LESS STANDING WATER. THIS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED AT A FRACTION OF THE MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS QUOTED FOR DRAINAGE WORK BY OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS.
ALL FAIRWAYS WILL BE CUT ,CLEANED AND DIVOT SCARS FILLED IN FOR THE START OF THE SEASON.
BUNKERS..BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS ALL BUNKERS WILL HAVE ALL BEEN EDGED AND TIDIED READY FOR FRESH SAND. WE HAVE BEEN USING DIFFERENT RAKES RECENTLY IN OUR EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE BUNKERS AND EARLY FEED BACK FROM SOME OF YOU IS PROMISING.
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT RAKES ARE NOW BACK IN THE BUNKERS AFTER THE TRIAL PERIOD OF GOLFERS CARRYING A RAKE IN THEIR BAG NEVER CAUGHT ON?
PRACTICE FACILITIES...THE NETS WILL BE BACK IN OPERATION THIS WEEK WITH EXTRA PADDING.
THE NEW CHIPPING GREEN PROJECT HAS STALLED SLIGHTLY DUE TO THE WEATHER BUT I HOPE TO CRACK ON WITH IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I ALSO INTEND TO INSTALL SOME SHORT GAME YARDAGE MARKERS TO TEST YOUR DISTANCE CONTROL !!!!
Sat 13th Feb:
COURSE UPDATE--RE WINTER/ EARLY SPRING.
First of all I would like to wish you all the best for the forthcoming golf season.
I also thank you all for your support and patience during what has been a difficult period for us all in more than one way or another.
Despite all the snow and other adverse weather conditions, we have still managed to complete most of our intended winter work programme.
I have spent many hours in discussion with The Chairman of greens ( Mike Scragg ) and The Greens Committee in order to devise a course sensitive winter programme.
Our decisions were based on last seasons course progress and also member requirements for the future.
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UPTO ???
The 16th Hill has been our main major project. As you can see most of the work has been completed in relation to the new path and its immediate surroundings. I anticipate two good weeks of dry ground conditions will be sufficient time to complete the outstanding work. The slopes either side of the path will be landscaped and seeded.
Pruning of trees...Although the frozen ground conditions have restricted progress on certain areas it has enabled us to carry out some much needed tree pruning.
The benefits of such work has seen the removal of primarily any dead wood and unnecessary branches.
Our thoughts whilst carrying out the pruning and in some cases the removal of certain trees were to create a better environment for the tree to mature in good health and visual shape.
Other benefits include:- improved air circulation and shade reduction around the course. I also anticipate less time spent by the golfer looking for balls.
Clearing leaves is a thankless task on every golf course. I feel we do an excellent job in limiting the inconvenience caused by uncontrollable leaf fall during October through to early December.
We have recently cleared stored leaves from along the fence at the 15th. Shortly we will be undertaking the enormous task of clearing stored leaves along the fence left of the 1st hole.
Paths.. It is our intention to improve all paths .The plan is to remove the old surface and carry out any necessary drainage and reshaping. The edges of the paths will in most cases blend in naturally with the adjacent turf without the use of formal timber / stone edgings. Red shale or artificial turf will be used as a new surface depending on the location of the path.
This update will continue ..covering
GREENS, TEES, FAIRWAYS AND BUNKERS.

Pro Tip: Keeping your head down - Right or Wrong?
One of the things that I consistently hear when fellow amateurs try to cure each other’s faults is, "keep your head down." or "keep your head still." Too many people believe that the golf swing must be completed while keeping the head perfectly still. This is NOT, I repeat NOT the case.
During the golf swing it is perfectly acceptable to move your head as long as you do so in the proper direction. Rather than saying the things I mentioned above, golfers should say "Keep your head at the same level".
During the back swing it is natural for a golfers head to move back, away from the target - especially if you are doing a full turn of your shoulders. Shifting your head away from the target up to 8-10 inches is acceptable as long as your head remains at the same level (i.e. height off of the ground) it will not cause you any great problems. What does cause problems is when a player tries to keep his/her head perfectly still and as a result ends up restricting their back-swing or developing a reverse pivot and guaranteed lack of power.
Try this, it will prove my point - Keeping your head perfectly still throw a golf ball under arm down the practise ground. Now try the same thing but allow your head to come up and watch the ball fly down the practise ground. Which goes further?
If a golfer maintains the same level with their head then they will have a much better chance of returning the club back to the proper height when hitting the ball. Not doing so may result in hitting the ball fat or thin. For example, if your head rises during the swing so must your shoulders. Your shoulders are attached to your arms and they are, in turn, attached to your hands. Guess where the club is located? You got it - your hands! Therefore, if you raise your head your club will rise up as well and catch the ball thin. The opposite is obviously true for lowering your head. You will swing the club too low and hit the ball fat or heavy.
Now, although the vertical movement of your head can cause you to hit the ball thin or fat, there are many other reasons to miss-hit the ball in these ways. I don't want anyone to believe there are no other reasons to cause you to hit a fat or thin shot, there are! But if you keep your head at the same level throughout the swing, you will avoid these miss-hits more often.
I hope this puts an end one of golf’s worst myths.
Good Luck
David
HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PUTTING STROKE OF A TOUR PROFESSIONAL
The professional golfer and good amateurs will spend many hours practicing their putting – going for specialist training and using all kinds of training aids. This works for them but how many of you have had a top quality putting lesson? My first piece of advice is – Have a putting lesson and you will save yourself stroke after stroke.
Most of the putting stroke is ‘feel’ and judgement. Get these correct and your putting stroke will be improving. The way to achieve feel is by closing the eyes and just making the stroke. How different is your stroke when you do this? Can you feel things happening that you could not have done with your eyes open – we are beginning to get feel. You are also using other learning styles to aid improvement. Imagine the difference when you do this?
Pro Tip: Something for the weekend! How to avoid slicing the ball
• Aim: Your clubface could be too open.
• Grip: Your hands may be twisted too far round to the left of the grip, known as a weak grip. As you swing through the ball the blade is naturally opening.
• Ball position: The ball could be too far forward in your stance causing your shoulders to open.
• Stance: Your stance may be too narrow causing you to be unstable and rely too much on your arms through the forward swing rather than your hips.
• Body alignment: Your feet, hips and shoulders are probably aiming too far left of the target causing you to swing your club on an 'out to in' swing path.
• Posture: You may be standing too far from the ball.
Ball too far forward in stance
• Swing: In the first part of the backswing the club goes too much to the inside. The left arm goes too much across the chest. The arms have got nowhere to go so they lift and go over the top, like a figure of eight almost.
• Practise Drill: Hit shots from a side hill lie with the ball above your feet. This will get you swinging along the correct target line rather than in, up and over.
